Clash of Brewers Aims to Build Bali’s Brewing Culture Beyond Competition

HUDES MAGAZINE - A new manual brewing platform called Clash of Brewers enter Bali’s specialty coffee scene in this year with a vision that goes beyond competition alone. Framed as a long-term movement for brewer development, the initiative aims to create a clearer pathway for Indonesian brewers to grow from local stages toward national-level competition.

Built on the foundation of Clash of Kettle, the platform introduces a structured progression system designed to support aspiring brewers through qualifying rounds, mentorship, and competitive preparation.

The project was created in response to the relatively limited participation of Balinese brewers in the Indonesia Brewers Cup (IBrC), despite Bali being home to one of Indonesia’s most mature specialty coffee ecosystems.

“Bali offers a unique opportunity to showcase Indonesian coffee and brewing talent to a global audience,” the organizers stated in their presentation, pointing to the island’s strong tourism industry and international visibility.

The competition is expected to involve dozens of participants from Bali’s coffee community, including professional and aspiring brewers, certified judges, coffee shop owners, and roasters. Organizers also aim to engage wider lifestyle and creative communities, positioning the event as both a competition and a cultural gathering.

Throughout the presentation deck, Clash of Brewers emphasizes themes such as brewer empowerment, sustainability, community engagement, and long-term industry development. Rather than focusing solely on winning titles, the platform appears to position itself as a developmental space where brewers can improve their technical skills, mindset, and readiness for larger competitions.

The organizing team itself consists of professionals from Bali’s coffee and creative industries, including individuals connected to local roasteries, cafés, and production collectives. Several supporting brands and collaborators were also featured in the presentation materials, suggesting that the project already has backing from parts of the local coffee community.

While the long-term impact of the platform remains to be seen, the emergence of initiatives like Clash of Brewers reflects the continuing evolution of Indonesia’s specialty coffee culture  where competitions are increasingly being treated not only as events, but as community-driven platforms capable of nurturing future talent.

For Bali’s coffee scene, Clash of Brewers may represent another step toward building a stronger and more connected brewing culture, one that links local communities with broader national ambitions. (Hudes Magazine)
